I don’t know about you, but exfoliation is a *very* important step in my skincare routine, especially once I’ve applied retinol over the course of a week and my skin starts to get a bit flakey. Here’s where microdermabrasion comes into play. The form of exfoliation can be done as an office procedure or at home, and it essentially buffs out the top layer of the skin using a diamond or crystal device. (But I'll get into the specifics later.)

If you’ve never experimented with different skincare treatments, microdermabrasion could be a good first one to try, says S. Manjula Jegasothy, MD, Miami Skin Institute founder and CEO and University of Miami Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology. Here's why.

What is microdermabrasion?

“Microdermabrasion is basically a form of exfoliation where you're helping to get rid of that top layer of dead skin cells,” says Marisa Garshick, MD, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology. In comparison to any other skin procedures, microdermabrasion doesn’t go as deep, just to the top layer of the skin, a.k.a., the epidermis, Dr. Jegasothy adds.

When done in-office, a diamond or aluminum hydroxide crystal device with mechanical agents is used to polish your face, but at home, a similar, less intense device is used. The machines remove the top layer of skin (think of a sanding sensation) by rubbing against the skin to buff away the dead skin layer. However, there’s a risk of doing it too aggressively and creating microtears in the skin, which can lead to redness, sensitivity, irritation, or even bruising or potential scarring.

If you'd rather ~ease~ into exfoliation, you can also forgo a device entirely and just use a microdermabrasion scrub, which is more of a physical exfoliant “comprised of different types of granules that are designed to physically get rid of that buildup of dead skin cells,” Dr. Garshick explains. Some scrubs will also contain a chemical exfoliant, like an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), that will also improve your skin’s texture and tone. (This list has both microdermabrasion forms—you’re welcome!)

Here's a preview of the best at-home microdermabrasion products:

Is microdermabrasion effective when done at home?

Yes, but not as effective as it would be in the office. “It tends to be safer for at-home use, but it also may not necessarily deliver the same results that in-office treatments would provide,” Dr. Garshick continues, because it doesn’t go as deep as an in-office one.

The suction is also much stronger on in-office devices, Dr. Jegasothy says, meaning that you’ll get less exfoliation from the treatment as a whole when done at home.

Heads up: Microdermabrasion isn't great for every skin type. For instance, if you have acne-prone skin or large pores, it might actually do more harm than good because there’s a chance the crystals can get lodged in your pores and cause you to have breakouts. And if you have very sensitive skin, it’s probably not a good idea, either, but mildly sensitive skin types can tolerate it. Also, if you have skin conditions like active acne marks or rosacea flareups, it’s also best to hold off on the treatment, Dr. Garshick says.

Up ahead, learn about the best microdermabrasion products, recommended by dermatologists and reviewers.

How do you choose the best at-home microdermabrasion tool?

*These* Microdermabrasion Products Will Make Exfoliation So Easy (70)

There are a few things to consider when choosing the best at-home microdermabrasion tool.

  • Ease of use: One of the most important things is that your microdermabrasion tool is easy to use and user-friendly, says Dr. Garshick. "If you're just starting out and you're using this for the first time, you don't want something that's too complicated or complex, so you want to find one that has a clear cut steps," she says.
  • Customization: Some at-home microdermabrasion products have different discs or head pieces for different skin types, so find one that you think will suit your skin, Dr. Garshick says. Different tips will also "minimize any potential for creating a suction that has bacteria," she adds, and you can take time to properly clean them.
  • Intensity levels: If you feel you're ~more experienced~ in the microdermabrasion space, feel free to try a product that goes a bit deeper in the skin, Dr. Garshick says.
  • Size: Find once that's compact, Dr. Garshick recommends. If you live in a smaller home and you don't have a lot of extra space for tools and kits, it might be better to get a smaller microdermabrasion kit.
  • Skin sensitivity: This one is important for scrubs—if your skin is more sensitive, look for a microdermabrasion scrub with a chemical exfoliant, because they tend to be less harsh on the skin, and one with smaller granules.
  • Medical grade: If possible, try to look for one that's a home version of the company that makes the medical grade products used in offices, Dr. Jegasothy says. "They're going to be a much, much higher standard of manufacturer," she explains.
  • Reviews: "In this day and age, go on Amazon and find the one that has the best reviews," she says. Smart!

How can you do microdermabrasion at home?

*These* Microdermabrasion Products Will Make Exfoliation So Easy (71)

First, clean your skin with a gentle cleanser, dry it completely—a wet face can affect the suction—and then follow the device's instructions, Dr. Garshick and Dr. Jegasothy say. Use the device with gentle upward strokes along your skin so you're lifting, and Dr. Jegasothy recommends starting at the jawline, then making your way up toward the forehead, being gentle around the eye area. She recommends doing about four passes throughout the face (and two around the eyes), since in offices they usually do about six. You can subsequently use the vacuum suction that will support circulation and also help to remove dead skin, Dr. Garshick says. The whole process shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

Afterward, rinse your face with water and then you can do a cooling paper mask for anti-redness or soothing for five to 10 minutes, then wash and dry your face and apply your skincare routine, Dr. Jegasothy says.

Remember that since you're exfoliating, you'll want to follow up with a gentle moisturizer and a sunscreen during the day, because your skin will be more sensitive, Dr. Garshick adds.

How often should you do microdermabrasion at home?

*These* Microdermabrasion Products Will Make Exfoliation So Easy (72)

You should do microdermabrasion at home a maximum of once per week, Dr. Garshick and Dr. Jegasothy say. "As dermatologists, it's something that we do stress to be extra cautious [about] when doing it," Dr. Garshick adds.

Depending on what your skin concern is, there might be in-office treatments that you might want to consider, too, so you might want to check with your dermatologist before investing in an at-home microdermabrasion product to ensure it's best for your skin type.
